Thay vì chỉ dùng 'he/she/it/they', người Việt sử dụng các từ chỉ quan hệ họ hàng (ông ấy, bà ấy, anh ấy, chị ấy) hoặc các từ mang sắc thái biểu cảm (hắn, y, thị, nó) tùy thuộc vào tuổi tác, thứ bậc xã hội và thái độ của người nói.
